A number of Neolithic settlements as well as findings dating to the Bronze Age and the Mycenaean Civilization have been discovered in Fthiotida.

Having been the only “bridge” connecting the North and the South of  Greece, Fthiotida became the stage of important battles.

In the ancient years Leonidas (with 300 Spartans and 700 Thespians) faced in the Pass of Thermopiles, with the call of ‘molon lave’ (come and take it), a disproportionally large number of Persians, becoming the symbol of heroic resistance that has lived down the ages.

In 1821 Athanassios Diakos, with a handful of brave men, revolted against the Turkish general Omer Vryonis.

During World War II (25/11/1942) Greek guerrillas in cooperation with English saboteurs blew up the bridge of Gorgopotamos, sabotaging the re-supply line of Romel and allowing the allies to counter-attack.
